Centre for Contemporary Culture

Amsterdam is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. Our key third year project was to design a Culture Centre for the city, in order to show off Amsterdam’s hugely diverse heritage. I selected a site along the city’s main High Street with the aim of drawing in some of the vast number of passing tourists. After going through several design iterations, the final design focuses on minimalism and simplicity, offering a clean space wrapped in a glass structure for use by ever changing flexible exhibitions. The highlight of the design is a timber clad theatre space within a rotated cuboid, floating high up above the exhibition spaces.

The design process was a successful experimentation in form and programmatic response, as well as offering the opportunity to explore my passion for high quality, minimal detailing, from which I learnt an awful lot that went on to influence my later work.
